Like A Charm (The story behind the song)

When I sat down to write this song, I had no idea what kind of magic was about to transpire. My mom has always written me all kinds of notes for as long as I can remember - emails, letters, post-it notes, letters in greeting cards…you name it! Most of us have a certain kind of family dynamic that can feel a bit awkward at times - like you speak a different language than your loved ones around you;) This one particular evening, I came home, read the latest card, and felt the frustration boiling. But when I got out my notepad, it came out in a fun, light-hearted way - so I just kept going with it. That same afternoon, my friend Jeremy had let me borrow his yellow electric guitar I nicknamed 'Birdie'. I sat down in the living room and started to play around with the guitar and the lyrics that had come to me for “LIKE A CHARM”.

Sometimes when I write it can take a while, but I remember this tune taking shape pretty quickly. And then after the song was written, I wondered about playing it out for people and who might relate to it. I soon found out, as I tested the song in my local venues for my fans, that almost everyone could resonate in some way or another. My fans started showing up at my gigs requesting the song a bunch and singing the lyrics along with me. It was then I knew this tune needed to be on my first album.

Whatever life’s reasons are beyond what our minds can comprehend, I believe in the grand design. I truly feel that my journey was meant to be this way, in this timing, with the very family I was born into. I am who I am today because of the story I have, and my mom is a huge part of the equation. I did work extra hard to find my own voice and confidence and as a result, I am VERY GRATEFUL to have my own story of empowerment now. As I share my songs, my intention for listeners is to have an energy of empowerment rub off on them too.

So when I say “it’s working like a charm” - I mean it. Everything is working out and this was all part of the plan. So, A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to my mom - for every single note…and for helping develop this story that I’m singing.
